Great Escapes: Great Escape: Kennebunk, Maine
We cruise through the Kennebunk River aboard Kylie's Chance.
"Kennebunkport is to your left," Kylie’s Chance Captain Tom Mansfield said.
With Captain Tom at the wheel, we sail our way to the area's most famous address.
"On the left we're coming past walkers' point," Captain Tom said.
Walkers Point, the estate of George and Barbara Bush.
After some sightseeing, the real fun begins.
"He pulled the lobster nets up and he started to explain about the lobsters," 11-year-old tourist Timothy Bernisky said.
Captain Tom gives us a fresh view of America's favorite crustacean.
"How you tell the sex of a lobster right here this set of claspers on the female," Captain Tom said.
Watching the lobster from a distance suits some just fine, but not me.
"Wow that is so cool. I've only seen them on my plate before, you know?" Chikage said.
Curious kids get their own close encounters with the lobster.
"Just like the feeling of it in my hand. It was really cool, it was like kind of slimy," 11-year-old tourist Audrey Rawlinson said.
After feeling the lobster, we check its size.
"You measure the lobster from the back of the eye socket to the back of the
carapace right here," Captain Tom said.
"Lobstering is a big industry in the state of Maine, you know a lot of money and there's a good reason," Captain Tom said.
The reason: Maine's cold, clean waters and rocky coast. A record 60 million pounds harvested just last year.
"I love lobsters and anyone who's a lobster lover, I love. We come up here my wife and my kids and all we do is eat lobster every night," tourist David Schlamm said.
Hungry after the cruise? It doesn't get more convenient than the Pilot House Restaurant.
"I think I'm in heaven...oh wow, this looks great!" Chikage said. "And trust me, it tastes even better."
Boston to Kennebunk and back, just 168 miles.
