Do detox kits work?

7 Healthcast: Do detox kits work?

The Independent Centers for Science investigated a range of products that use the word "detox" to market their supplements, cleanses and patches. They all promise to melt pounds and improve health, but do they live up to their claims?

Dr. Daniella Muallem, Scientist
"There really isn't any scientific meaning to the word ‘detox.' Each product has a different definition. In fact, when we contacted them they didn't even know themselves what they meant by ‘detox.' And then the claims that they made, none of the products were able to provide evidence that these claims are true."

Scientists say that the body is perfectly capable of cleansing itself, and that all that is required for optimal health is plenty of water and a good night's sleep.

But the detox industry is a multi million dollar a year industry, and they stand by their products.

But the public's not buying into it.

"It's all about what you eat and working out as well."

"The pills, yes I've been through the fad. They don't really work at the end of the day."

So the message from the study is that there is no quick fix, and the best way to lose weight and stay healthy is a sensible diet and moderate exercise.
