It's called the canine flu.
It's a highly contagious virus that started circulating among dogs a few years ago.

Veterinarians say the canine flu can often be confused with kennel cough, so be on the lookout for warning signs in your pet.
Dr. Hugh Davis, veterinarian
"Symptoms are similar to what you'd see in human flu, coughing, usually a moist productive cough, sometimes fever, not feeling great, loss of appetite -that sort of thing".
A canine flu vaccine is available, and it's recommended in certain cases.
Dr. Hugh Davis, veterinarian
"Most of the outbreaks have taken place in shelters, these are considered higher risk groups, also much like the human situation, of you have an older, debilitated dog or dog going into a kennel, that's a situation where I would strongly recommend a vaccine."
Vets say the good news is that the canine flu its rarely fatal and not a threat to people.
Dr. Hugh Davis, veterinarian
"This is not swine flu, this is not seasonal flu, this is a canine influenza and cannot be passed on to people in any way."
Doctors say the Canine flu can often be confused with kennel cough, so best to always get your dog checked out by a vet.
