7 Healthcast: Bone marrow transplants

A bone marrow transplants can be a lifesaver. Just ask Boston Red Sox president Larry Lucchino.

"In 1985 I was diagnosed with Hodkins Lymphoma, treated conventionally with chemotherapy, and eventually received an ontalogust bone marrow transplant."

Larry was lucky , because less than half of the people that need bone marrow transplants find a match.

"Most patients can find a donor, but there are a sizable number of patients who can't. And I would say that the odds are hardest for patients in minority communities where it might be tougher to find a donor and a longer process to find a donor."

But Larry hopes by bringing extra attention to a national bone marrow registry he can help others.

"We knew that the notariety of the Red Sox could be helpful in attracting young, spirited college students to sign up for the bone marrow reigstery. It's a painless process but it can result in life saving treatment down the road for all ages."

The Red Sox have teamed up with AFLAC in an effort to find donors. And it's already paying off! Steve Karas, a diehard Sox fan, donated marrow that helped to save a baby boy.

"It turned out that I was a near pefect match for a one year old boy who had a horrible disaese called osteopatrosis and without a transplant he wouldn't have lived to be two years old."

Today, that baby, Matthew Welling of Long Island is a healthy, happy 2 year old and his parents are forever grateful.

Larry  agrees, and knows first hand just how valuable a gift it is.
