7 Healthcast: Fake pharmacies create drug shortages
Investigators said one cause of prescription drug shortages could be fake pharmacies.
In North Carolina, investigators found a pharmacy, no information on record about it, that was buying drugs, selling them to a wholesaler and reselling the drugs again at higher prices. One congressman says it's an example of a fake pharmacy exploiting drug shortages.
“It’s about greed, simply about greed. People wanting to make a quick buck at the expense of sick, American people,” said Rep. Elijah Cummings (D - Maryland).
Fake pharmacies like that are turning up nationwide. Investigators said they are making the drug shortages worse and driving up prices.
