7 Healthcast: Allergen free peanut

Posted: 07/25/07

Dr. Mohamed Ahmedna has developed a process to make allergen free peanuts. It's something he's been working on for the last six years.

Each year millions of people suffer from peanut allergies and some even die.

"People who couldn't enjoy peanuts and peanut related products hopefully will have a product they can consume," Dr. Ahmedna said.

So how does he do it?

Dr. Ahmedna and other doctors at North Carolina A&T State University developed an inexpensive and biological method to reduce or completely inactivate the allergens in peanuts, peanut flour and other peanut products.

"The second positive outcome is adding value to the peanut industry, developing a product that can tape into a new niche market," Dr. Ahmedna said.

Researchers say the patent on this allergen-free peanut is pending. Several food companies are already lining up to learn more about this breakthrough.
