7 Healthcast: Botox alternative
Josephine Smith has decided to do something about her frown lines, but instead of Botox she's trying a procedure people are beginning to call no-tox.
"What we're working on is trying to get a result that lasts one to one and a half years," said plastic surgeon Dr.Michael Jasin.
The procedure's real name is Glabellar Furrow Relaxation, or GFX.
Dr. Michael Jasin performed the procedure on Rose Kerr three months ago.
The doctor uses a small probe to administer radio frequency and disable the nerves that control those "frown" muscles. The technology was first developed to use on nerves in the heart, and now patients are falling in love with it for a different reason- Results last much longer than Botox.
"If we can get the longevity to year year and a half at 95 percent then I think we're really going to have something special," said Dr.Jasin.
Kerr says, for her, no-tox is a definite yes.
"I would definitely use this instead of the Botox," says Kerr.
The procedure costs about $2,000 per treatment and has been used for about one year. So far it's only being used in the forehead, but doctors are looking in to other parts of the face and maybe even as a treatment for migraine headaches.
