Car with a Secret
Help Me Hank: Car with a Secret
"Isn't it beautiful!"
When Catherine chose her four-door at the used car dealer, she thought she'd been such a savvy customer!
"I asked, had it been in an accident? He said no."
But soon after the sale, she got suspicious. The car's door stuck, the dashboard creaked, and when it rained, the trunk was full of water!
"I wanted that fixed."
Back to the dealer! And to Catherine's chagrin, the car was in the shop for four weeks!
"I kept thinking something is wrong here."
Correct. When she did a simple on-line check of the car's history, she found it had a salvage title! Catherine had actually bought a rebuilt wreck!
"I thought well I've been taken on this car."
Back to the dealer! This time Catherine's daughter versus the salesman... and she was losing.
"He said to her, 'we can force her to keep this car.' Linda said, 'oh no you cant.' He said. 'Oh yes we can.'"
That's when they called "Help Me Hank."

"May I speak to the manager please?"
So we called the dealer and explained his deal: Mass law says he must make a reasonable effort to be sure the car is not salvaged, state consumer affairs officials confirm it.
- Kerry Smith, Massachusetts Consumer Affairs
"And if they didn't do that, it could be considered an unfair and deceptive trade practice."
As a result, the dealer cannot tell Catherine to take a hike.
"What if the car dealer says, it's your car now?"
- Kerry Smith
"The car dealer in that case is wrong."
Bottom line, Catherine should get her money back or a new car and the dealer eventually agreed! So all that's left of "car day" is this video and now that's a movie with a happy ending.
"Now he's calling and getting the car so it's looking good."
Remember used car buying rule number one, verify the car's history!
