Help Me Hank! Lost Paycheck

Help Me Hank: Help Me Hank! Lost Paycheck

Posted: 10/25/06

We've all found a penny on the side walk, loose change in the console or a couple of quarters under the couch cushions.

But when Maria Wright was unpacking after a move, she hit the found money jackpot with this old paycheck from a former employer.

Maria Wright, paycheck problem
"I was so happy. I was like yes, I'm rich."

Then she was like, 'No.' The check was from 2003 -- too old to cash at a bank.

Maria Wright, paycheck problem
"It's void."

The hundred bucks shouldn't just disappear, but when she called her old boss she got bad news.

Maria Wright, paycheck problem
"They wouldn't be able to issue me a new check."

Maria complained because they owed her the money.

Maria Wright, paycheck problem
"I said it was my money. Why couldn't she reissue me a new check?"

They said they had a new payroll company and told Maria she was out of luck.

Maria Wright, paycheck problem
"I'd have to take a loss."

Take the loss? Maria had a different idea.

Maria Wright, paycheck problem
"I said call 'Help Me Hank.'"

New payroll company, huh? That's no defense. We knew Maria should get the money she earned.

The state's Treasurer's Office confirmed that once a valid paycheck is issued, you're due that money. In fact, after three years, uncashed paychecks like Maria's must be turned over to the state's Abandoned Property Office, then they go on that annual list of unclaimed funds.

So, we called Maria's former employer to remind them that one way or another, Maria would get her money. And they agreed. So, we headed to the office to pick up the new paycheck they instantly issue.

Then we got to deliver it to a very happy Maria.

"Great. Perfect. Time to pay some bills!"
