Help Me Hank! I bought a lemon

Help Me Hank: Help Me Hank! I bought a lemon

Posted: 05/01/07

Would you want to see your new car on a tow truck? Jennifer McCue was psyched to see it! And here's why: when she bought this used car, she had 10-month-old daughter, Jenaya, in mind.

Jennifer McCue, car owner
"I expect that this car is nice and reliable, safe and reliable for me and my daughter."

McCue was told this $12,000 used car met her needs, and she drove it right off the lot. Well, after she put down $3,028.

Jennifer McCue, car owner
"I thought that that was a good decision."

But on its maiden voyage, on the way to get her inspection sticker, the dashboard lit up! The check and service engine lights came on! Her new car stalled on the side of the highway.

Jennifer McCue, car owner
"I was mad, you know, disappointed."

McCue got it restarted and went straight to the inspection station. But you see the big "R" on the windshield? That means rejected. The mechanic's verdict: two bad tires, a leak under the hood and a broken computer system. Total Cost: could be more than $1200! When McCue called the dealer, they wanted to fix it. She said no way.

Jennifer McCue, car owner
"I said all I want is my money back."

So, McCue went online to look up her rights, and from what she saw, she bought a lemon. So armed with the law and her paperwork, she went to the dealer. But they insisted, a deal is a deal.

Jennifer McCue, car owner
"My jaw dropped. I was shocked."

She was left with an undrivable car, a big repair bill and years worth of car payments for a car she couldn't drive. McCue's situation needed a jump start.

Jennifer McCue, car owner
"I decided to call Hank Phillippi Ryan."

The lemon-aid law? We know all about it, and McCue sure has a lemon. That's because her used car failed inspection within seven days of purchase, and her mechanic said to fix it would cost more than 10 percent of the car's purchase price.

Hank Phillippi Ryan, Investigative Reporter
"Bottom line, this car is a lemon.'"

We knew this car deal. McCue wanted out of this one, and the dealer was required to take this lemon back.

Hank Phillippi Ryan, Investigative Reporter
"So, you'll take the car and she gets her money?"

And look at this, McCue's used car lemon on the tow truck, and her refund for $3,028 came hand-delivered.

Jennifer McCue, car owner
"I'm going to buy a new car with it and get the car checked by a mechanic first."
