Help Me Hank: Help Me Hank! Lost Class Ring
Whether she was headed to the store for milk or muffins, she doesn't remember. She does remember she looked down and saw a flash of blue.
"And I was like, ooh," Diane Melendez said.
She stopped in her tracks and checked it out.
"And I picked it up and it was a ring," Melendez said.
A sparkly blue stone set in gold with the unmistakable design of a class ring.
"I felt kind of bad that somebody would lose something like that, you know, that like personal," Melendez said.
Taking a closer look she uncovered some clues "UM" might be UMass, "80" could be class of 80, and then she looked inside.
"I'm like oh, there is a name!" Melendez said.
She looked in the phone book nothing. She called the company who made the ring but it was a dead end.
"And they said I guess their records don’t go back that far, and I’m like, will you know I tried," Melendez said.
Now what we didn't mention: this was in 1990 or so. Diane put the ring away, but when she unpacked after moving to a new home this summer she found it again.
"So that's when I thought of, let me call Channel 7," Melendez said.
We knew right where to go we thought: look at all the websites devoted to lost and found class rings, but there wasn't one that matched the 1980 UMASS, then we thought wait a minute! There's that name inside!
Turned out Diane had read it wrong looked up the wrong spelling and when we entered the correct name: Tada!
We made one phone call to confirm, and here's what happened soon after.
"Thank so you much I’m so excited to get this back," Beth Agersea said.
The return of the ring!
We took Diane herself to deliver the goods to a very surprised UMASS Class of 80 ex-coed who looked like this when she bought her college keepsake, and now all grown up and successful gets back a very special possession.
"I haven't seen it in so long, it’s a very strange feeling very strange, but it feels good," Agersea said.
The point of all this: besides the happy ending if you've lost your class ring, or found one, there are lots of places to check. Click on the links below for more information.
