Fenced In

Help Me Hank: Fenced In

Hank
"Wow, I see what you mean!"

You've got to see Jolene's fence to believe it...

Jolene Edwards, Fence buyer
"It’s held up by rope."

Told you! It’s rickety, rotting and really, really, well - if a fence is supposed to keep something out or something in - this one doesn't do either. And with the dog getting loose and the kids getting splinters-

It was time to say goodbye.

Jolene Edwards, Fence buyer
"Thought, ‘Time for a new fence, let’s go order a fence.’"

Now the fun part: did she want a lattice fence? A wooden fence? A chain link? Maybe both! She decided on a special-order white cedar with a privacy top, and paid, by check, about $1200. But instead of getting a fence, she got a phone call.

Jolene Edwards
"They told me it was backordered and they had no date when the fence would be in and that they would be sending my money back."

OK, a bother - but no biggie. Problem was, she checked her mailbox and checked it and checked it, her refund check never arrived!

Hank
"So at this point you had no fence and no money."

Jolene Edwards
"Exactly."

So Jolene's battle began. She was told:

Jolene Edwards
"The check has to come from Georgia."

She was told:

Jolene Edwards
"We have no record of you anywhere in the computer."

She was told:

Jolene Edwards
"It went to the wrong address and the wrong state."

And finally:

Jolene Edwards
"I wanted to scream at someone but it wasn’t going to get me anywhere, so that’s when I thought of calling "Help Me Hank".

Jolene Edwards
"Honest to God, I had had it with these people."

Sounded like Jolene was buried in the system, somewhere deep in the computers and corporate ledger books, so we called the company to try to dig her out. We reminded them they had the money and Jolene had nothing. And soon after - well, let her tell you:

Jolene Edwards
"Pretty soon after that I got my check."

Jolene's fence is still as bad as they get. Now, at least, she has money again for a new one.

Jolene Edwards
"Oh, it’s going to look awesome."

This is another case of the "should have paid by credit card" rule. That way when an order is cancelled, you can instantly get your refund.

If you're fighting a consumer battle, maybe I can help!
