Help Me Hank: Wrong Yankee
There are so many magazines out there, definitely something for everyone. Madonna? She's Vogue. Juila Child? Bon Appetit! But how about Vicki Bancroft? O.K. Here's a hint: She lives in a cute little house on the beach, has plates on display and shells on the mantel and loves to ski -- She's Yankee Magazine, of course.
Vicki Bancroft, Magazine Subscriber
"I adore the beach and I adore going on boats and it’s the perfect magazine."
So when the telemarketer offered cheap subscriptions, Vicki signed up.
Vicki Bancroft
"They read me the list of what was available and I thought well, Yankee Magazine sounds good."
Soon after, Vicki went to her mailbox and pulled out her new arrival -- it was Yankees. Not the fall foliage, lobster cooking, sand dune Yankee. It was guys in pin stripes, Roger Clemens, too many pennants Yankees.
Vicki Bancroft
"I do not like baseball, but if I did it would be the Boston Red Sox, not the New York Yankees."
She didn't want home runs, she wanted home decoration! Not the big apple -- apple pie!
Vicki Bancroft
"I mean my heart goes out to New York City, I love it as an American, but the New York Yankees… no it’s not my team."
Since it wasn't supposed to be her magazine either, she was annoyed when she got another one!
Vicki Bancroft
"I was assured that it would be fixed, but still the Yankees, the NY Yankees baseball magazines kept arriving."
After issue three -- strike one. She again picked up the phone.
Vicki Bancroft
"I was using the descriptive language, New York baseball versus New England living."
Issue four arrived -- strike two. She sent a letter: "I can't believe this" -- "not Yankees."
Then Issue five arrived: strike three.
Vicki Bancroft
"I say, ‘that’s it I’m going to e-mail Hank."
We called the company and explained again, not the bench -- the beach. And what's more we said Vicki should not be charged for magazines she never ordered, she paid for a year of Yankee, she should get a year of Yankee.
Soon after, Vicki checked her mailbox and it was game over, Yankee arrived! And now this New England yankee will be getting 12 full months of the magazine.
Vicki
"This is the one, this is not the one!"
The Federal Trade Commission says magazine sales are a persistent problem and the feds warn, be especially careful about what you order over the phone.
So what consumer battle are you fighting, maybe I can help!
