The Hiller Instinct: Decision ‘04: Final Debate

Moderator Ted Koppel began the debate seeking reaction from the Democrats Gore didn’t endorse.

Sen. Joseph Lieberman, (D) Presidential Candidate
"I think in some unpredicted, unsuspected way – my chances have actually increased today."

Wesley Clark, (D) Presidential Candidate
"I think elections are about the people, not about the powerful – I think there was a man named Al Gore who once said that."

Sen. John Kerry, (D) Presidential Candidate
"This race is not over until the votes have been cast and counted."

Rep. Richard Gephardt, (D) Presidential Candidate
"I’m sure all us think we have the best chance to beat George Bush, but I think we are all united in wanting to replace George Bush

Howard Dean, (D) Presidential Candidate
"If you guys are upset about Al Gore’s endorsement, attack me, don’t attack Al Gore."

Gore’s endorsement kept the other candidates on the defensive. John Edwards, for example, was asked what has gone wrong in his campaign.

John Edwards
"Nothing. Nothing. What’s about to happen is the real campaign is about to occur."

Kerry’s exasperation at the tone of the debate became apparent when he was asked why Dean is ahead in the polls.

Sen. John Kerry, (D) Presidential Candidate
"If I were an impolite person, I would tell you where you could take your polls."

What this debate proved is the potency of Al Gore’s endorsement. Ultimately, the Democratic race will come down to two candidates and Howard will be one, the rest must fight to be the other. Breath in and you can almost smell their desperation.
