The Hiller Instinct: South Carolina Debate
New dynamics directed the South Carolina debate, new frontrunner John Kerry immediately challenged for saying in New Hampshire, "everybody always makes the mistake of looking south".
Sen. John Kerry (D) Presidential Candidate
"I've can always said I will compete in the south, I've always said I think win in the south."
Southerner John Edwards said the democrats can’t ignore the region…
Sen. John Edwards (D) Presidential Candidate
"Historically we've never elected a democrat president without winning at least five southern states."
Former frontrunner Howard Dean questioned the integrity of his rivals…
Howard Dean (D) Presidential Candidate
"How do you know anybody else is going to stand up for you if they wouldn't do it when it really counted and when it wasn't popular?"
Dean also tried to confront Kerry, but Kerry dismissed him…
Howard Dean (D) Presidential Candidate
"I mean him no insult, but in 19 years in the senate, Senator Kerry sponsored 11 bills that had anything to do with health care and not one of them passed."Sen. John Kerry (D) Presidential Candidate
"One of the things that you need to know as a president is how things work in congress."
For Edwards, South Carolina is a must win and he said he will win…
Sen. John Edwards (D) Presidential Candidate
"I believe I'm going to win and I'm going to go forward."
For the others, this question, if you don't win one of the many primaries in the next two weeks, will you surrender?
General Wesley Clark (D) Presidential Candidate
"Well I think we are going to win some of these states."
Sen. Joseph Lieberman (D) Presidential Candidate
"Candidates, who run for president, are very optimistic people, so I intend to win some."Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D) Presidential Candidate
"I believe this race is going all the way to the convention."
Rev. Al Sharpton (D) Presidential Candidate
"I fully expect to win primaries in the coming weeks."
John Kerry could ignore Howard Dean during the debate, but he won't be able to ignore the issue Dean raised. Kerry's record has been challenged before in senate races here and, now, as a national front-runner, it will be bi-sected, and then tri-sected. And Kerry will have to answer the question Gary Hart couldn't… "Where's the beef?"
