The Hiller Instinct: Judd Gregg withdraws

Posted: 02/12/09

And this isn't the first surprise for Obama, who's only been in the White House three weeks. In fact, Gregg is the president's fourth high-level nominee to withdraw, and together they damage the perception of his judgment and competence.  Just by its timing, Gregg's decision also dilutes the president's victory in getting a quick deal for his stimulus and cuts any appearance of bipartisanship.

This battle between Republicans and Democrats isn't just about politics. It's also about principle. So, when Gregg says he's always been a strong fiscal conservative and that he has "irresolvable conflicts" with the president, his implication is clear: like nearly all Republicans, he doesn't support this economic plan.  Gregg wouldn't say how he'll vote on it, but I think he did.

The president and the Democrats believe they're finally on the right track, but the Republicans disagree and don't want to be on this stimulus train with them.

We're just the passengers.

I'm Andy Hiller, and that's my instinct.
