The Hiller Instinct: Gas Tax and Spending
But here's a real choice: when the economy shrinks, should government spending go up or down?
On Beacon Hill, spending is staying about the same...but, on Capitol Hill, it's exploding. And no one knows whether all the Federal bail-outs will revive the economy, or whether spending and borrowing more money will just make a crisis created by too much spending and borrowing worse.
Politically, I understand the Democrats' point-of-view. If their stimuli are successful, then they're heroes. And if the economy doesn't improve, then more and more Americans will become needy, and more and more will become Democrats, because Democrats are the party of the needy.
I also understand why the Republicans don't have enough votes to do anything but complain: because the economy was crippled when they were in control.
So I'm hoping what Washington is trying now will work. Not because I'm a Democrat...but because the Republicans had their chance and failed...and if the Democrats fail, then we don't have a political party that knows how to save us.
I'm Andy Hiller, that's my instinct.
