The Hiller Instinct: Obama's speech

Tonight convinces me the president and we--the people--are at a turning point. And the trillion dollar question is whether America will turn toward, or away from the president.

Once again at his news conference, he advocated--and defended--more spending, more taxing, and more borrowing.  The result is that in just two months, our national mood has gone from anxious-for-change to just anxious.

In January, the week after he was inaugurated he had a 63% job approval rating, and, it's still a very solid 61%.  But his disapproval number has gone from 20% in January to 31% now...a dangerous trend.

And while 71% of the nation thought we were headed in the right direction in January, that number has shrunk to 57%...while the 24% who thought we were on the wrong track has increased to 38% since he took office.

Since Obama is a big enough basketball fan to fill out his NCAA bracket on TV, just for a moment I'd like to be his coach.

Mr. President, please! Stop shooting from downtown!  First, hit a couple of lay-ups.Then you can go for all the three-pointers you want. Because, right now, if what you put up is an air ball, we'll all lose.
