The Hiller Instinct: President Obama's Nobel Prize
Yesterday, the Nobel was the most prestigious prize on the planet; today it seems like just another award to a celebrity.
The Nobel Prize Committee has jumped the shark. All it needs now is Joan Rivers on a red carpet the night the prize is presented.
For openers, how do you give a peace prize to someone who's about to increase the number of troops in a war in Afghanistan?
And doesn't the prize committee know the president's performance is being poked fun of?
"When you look at my record, it's very clear what I've done so far...and that is nothing," an actor playing President Obama said. This was Saturday Night just days before the president won the prize: "On my first day in office, I said I'd close Guantanamo Bay. Is it closed yet? No. I said we'd be out of Iraq. Are we? Not the last time I checked," the actor said.
But don't blame the president for any of this. If you win a Nobel Prize, you take it...along with the more than $1 million that comes with it. The president says he'll give the money to charity...so at least something worth respecting will come of this prize.
I'm Andy Hiller & that's my instinct.
