The Hiller Instinct: Hiller Instinct: Big news?
Not only because everybody already knew he was running, but also because Reilly just doesn't have enough personality to get on the news without actually making news.and not alone in this race...
The Governor's office has had stars for years...but they'll go out after this election.
Media magnets like Mitt Romney, William Weld, even history-making Jane Swift lit up the Governor's office on Beacon Hill.
Now take Republican frontrunner Kerry Healey, who always looks like her suit was just steamed. Can you imagine her jumping into the Charles, a la Bill Weld?
Or Reilly, who's so meek he whispers, leading the charge against a toll booth as Weld did:
Deval Patrick might be the brightest bulb of the bunch, but the odds are it's light out for him in this election.
Christy Mihos could be the most entertaining candidate, but his stature gap is no joke.
And none of the current candidates can match the gold medal resume Mitt Romney brought to the last race...or his family photo-op that looks like a Hollywood casting call.
In the news these days, looks count more than they should.
Say what you will about Jane Swift--and I'm sure you'll say plenty--but she did bring history to Beacon Hill, as America's first pregnant Governor.
When these candidates debate this fall, don't expect anything like the debate in '98:
"You can't handle the truth"
Yes that line came from a "movie"
"You can’t handle the truth"
But if these candidates were in a movie, it would be: Flatliners.
Right now, personalities dominate campaigns and this campaign doesn't have a dominant personality.
So my handle on the truth is that there will be less interest in this race for governor than there's been in the past, no matter how many policy papers the candidates prepare.
I'm Andy Hiller, and that's my instinct.
