The Hiller Instinct: Joe Kennedy Interview
You see the name...you see the office...and your mind's eye sees a face. But this isn't the Joe Kennedy who's running for the Senate....this is: "I am a small government candidate. And I am small government on every issue that you come to,” Joe L. Kennedy said.
"What are the three words that best describe you?" Hiller asked.
"I would say, creative, motivated, and uh, probably workaholic."
Joe Kennedy is also a Libertarian who's running as an independent. He's against war, the health care reform bill, and the federal income tax. He's a businessman who's never run for office before. Calling him a long-shot is a compliment:
"To be, to be blunt- I probably have a two to five percent chance," Kennedy said.
Politically, Kennedy has little in common with either of his opponents.
"They are all big government people, whether they are spending taxpayer dollars on wars, or they're spending taxpayer dollars on entitlement programs really doesn't make any difference, spending of money is spending," Kennedy said.
But if he had to make a choice…
"I would probably throw my vote to Scott Brown, because he would do less damage," Kennedy said.
Now, about that name…
"I have no relation to the Kennedy family, don't claim any relation, do not agree with a lot of the liberal policies,” Kennedy said.
Hiller: “But voters could be confused.”
Kennedy: “Technically, is it possible a voter could be confused? Absolutely."
Hiller: "With all respect, do you see how this could be looked at as a "joke" Kennedy?”
Kennedy: "Well, yeah, I think that a lot of people will say that until they get to know you."
And here's something that will let you know him better:
“I love to snowboard,” Kennedy said with a snicker.
You can laugh with Joe Kennedy, but don't laugh at him.
He knows he's not going to win, but he has made his point: under Republicans and Democrats, the Federal government has become too big, too expensive, and too powerful.
