The Hiller Instinct: Gov. Patrick in Iraq

What's most newsworthy about this trip is the trip: it was a surprise. But, no one should be surprised it was kept secret.

Gov. Patrick went to where there are two wars, with four other governors.

Secrecy helped ensure their safety, and the safety of all the soldiers travelling with them.

Given the dangers, knowing in advance didn't matter much. Just imagine if something happened to that group. No, don't imagine it.

I also expect the governor will be criticized for going now, when so much is happening right here.

To that I'd say, if I had a son or daughter in the military in the Mideast, I'd be very pleased the governor went, to let my children know they're not forgotten.
