The Hiller Instinct: Kerry's Yacht Taxes
Maybe one more round of ridicule will finally convince him to open his ears and close his mouth, before he puts his foot in it again.
Once again, Kerry has gone too near the water, which continually gets him in trouble....this time with a sailboat fit for a king.
Remember his service in the Navy in Vietnam...in a swift boat? Kerry thought it should make everyone respect him, but by the time the 2004 Presidential campaign was over, his reputation had received a swift kick in the butt--I mean boat.
And here's another water problem Kerry had during that campaign: an ad of him windsurfing, constantly changing directions. The message: want to know where John Kerry stands? Which way is the wind blowing?
Now it's the sailboat, which Kerry would like us to believe he always intended to pay Massachusetts taxes on.
But it's really not so clear he planned to pay, because--as he points out--he doesn't own the boat--his wife does.
So it's possible Kerry might have avoided Bay State taxes and not broken the letter of the law.
But the spirit? I'd say he has broken that.
"Not an issue, period,” insists Kerry, but he's wrong. It is an issue, and a reasonable one for everybody who pays all their taxes, including those supported and voted for by the senator.
Over the years, I've sometimes felt sorry for Senator Kerry, and wondered whether the media had made him into something he's not.
But we haven't.
And any sympathy I may have had for him sailed away on his new boat.
I’m Andy Hiller, and that’s my instinct.
