Governor\'s Race Heats Up
The Hiller Instinct: Governor's Race Heats Up
Today the three major candidates held almost back-to-back-to-back news conferences on the State House steps.
Patrick got the war of words going by repeating his attacks on Republican Charlie Baker for his role in the Big Dig budget boondoggle:
"That whole financing scheme was about misleading the public and not telling the public the truth. And that is a difference we have brought to this administration and that we will continue if given another four years," said the governor.
Next up was Treasurer Tim Cahill, who could only pick a side...and he sided with the governor, against Baker:
"Misleading is certainly part of the vocabulary I would say is part of the Big Dig and it was part of a culture of misleading people at that point," Cahill said.
"Is Charlie Baker a liar?" Hiller asked.
"I, I don't know," Cahill said.
So what do you think the question was at Baker's news conference?
"Did you lie about the Big Dig financing?" Hiller asked.
"No I did not lie," Baker said.
And then he went on offense, labeling both Patrick and Cahill hypocrites:
"And by the way, it's the same financing mechanism, Andy, that the governor is using to fund his Accelerated Bridge Program and it's also the same financing mechanism that the treasurer called a prudent investment of state money when the governor announced his plan last year," Baker said.
Charlie Baker met an old charge with a new response today.
He was aggressive and even passionate in defusing the governor's Big Dig bombs. For anyone wondering if Baker could ever turn on the heat, today he was as hot as the weather.
I’m Andy Hiller, and that’s my instinct.
