The Hiller Instinct: Loscocco quits Cahill, endorses Baker
"I'm not a quitter, I've never quit on anything I've done, I won't give in," Cahill said.
But Cahill's former running mate sure quit on him today, and that's not all. Paul Loscocco endorsed Cahill's competitor, Republican Charlie Baker. Why?
"It's painfully clear, the primary's over and Tim cannot win," Loscocco said.
And when Cahill's top strategist--John Weaver--quit last week, he said the same thing, "It's just recognizing the reality that's it's just not going to happen for Tim."
Boosted by his rival's running mate, Charlie Baker joined the chorus:
"I think the governor of Massachusetts is going to be Deval Patrick for four more years, or Charlie Baker for a change and a different direction," Baker said.
Hiller asked Cahill: "Who has better odds of winning? You to be governor or somebody or buys a lottery ticket?"
Cahill: "I have much better chances of being elected governor, but I think the people who play the lottery also have a good chance and those who don't win still contribute to local aid."
Hiller: "Is it possible you're in denial, sir?"
Cahill: "No."
Cahill called his former running mate's switch an "insider's play" and Governor Patrick's campaign picked up that theme, calling it "political scheming" and a "back room deal."
"It's hard to imagine there wasn't some deal. But you know, this is, this is politics as usual," Patrick said.
Between now and election day, Cahill will look more and more like green rainbow candidate Jill Stein...a minor candidate with little chance of success.
"As for not having a lieutenant governor," Cahill said, "I don't plan to die. And we can save money on that useless job." (applause)
A month before Election Day, we have our first exit polls. Tim Cahill is out; Jill Stein was never in; and it's too close to call between Baker and Patrick.
That's the race a majority of Massachusetts' voters wanted, and now they have it.
I’m Andy Hiller, and that’s my instinct.
