Hiller Instinct: Race for governor
The Hiller Instinct: Hiller Instinct: Race for governor
Deval Patrick has passed Tom Reilly to take over the top spot. This is the governor's poll numbers that should already be cut.
Our 7News Suffolk University poll shows Patrick with 31 % of likely democratic primary voters ...Reilly at 25%...Chris Gabrieli third at 22%...and 21% undecided.
7's political editor Andy Hiller takes us inside the numbers of our exclusive poll.
Andy Hiller asks, "So how does it feel to be the frontrunner?"
Deval Patrick, candidate for governor, says, "I'm pleased, but, you know, polls come and go."
But this is a poll Patrick hopes doesn’t go anywhere because it shows he’s climbed to the top by building an organization, dominating the Democrat’s convention, and campaigning with policies and passion.
Hiller asks, "Do you remember it wasn’t so long ago when the wiseguys said he’s got no chance?
Patrick replied, "Do I remember? Some of the wiseguys are still saying it. They’ll be people who say he can’t win the day I take the oath of office."
Our poll says Tom Reilly is no longer the presumed nominee. Given his well-known weaknesses as a candidate, Reilly may have trouble rebounding.
Chris Gabrieli is right behind Reilly...steadily gaining support. Gabrieli has already spent millions on his campaign, but, even in politics, money can't buy everything.
Suffolk University pollster, Professor David Paleologos says, "Look at the numbers. You've got a decreasing amount of time before the September primary. You've got undecided that keeps decreasing as well...and you've got momentum for Deval Patrick. So, if you're one of his opponents, you have to be saying to yourself, ‘Is the time running out on my campaign?’"
Republican Kerry Healey will meet whichever democrat wins the primary, and right now she'd lose to them all.
In our poll of general election voters Healey trails Patrick and Reilly by 13 percentage points, and Gabrieli by 19.
Paleologos says, "Thank God the election's not today, that's all I have to say about Kerry Healey. Her numbers are horrible, unfavorable higher than her favorable, and people are linking her with Mitt Romney to the problems that they're suffering everyday."
As the summer starts, and more minds are on the beach than on ballots, Patrick doesn't have to worry about Reilly and Gabrielli as much as they have to worry about him. Unless they shake this race up, our poll says Patrick is positioned to win.
