Hiller Instinct: Gabrieli\'s big gain
The Hiller Instinct: Hiller Instinct: Gabrieli's big gain
Chris Gabrieli with 32 percent.
Deval Patrick's in second with 24 percent,
Tom Reilly 20, and 24% are still undecided.
7's Political Editor, Andy Hiller, takes a look at Gabrieli's big gain.
This summer, while you were lying on the beach...or crying at Fenway Park...the Democrats running for Governor were on a roller coaster.
In May, Tom Reilly was on top, Deval Patrick was second, and Chris Gabrieli third. In June, Patrick took over as number one and Reilly tumbled to two. Now, Gabrieli has gone from the back of the pack to the front, and it's Patrick and Reilly falling behind...
I ask Gabrieli if heís surprised:
Maybe he should be. Because our poll also shows Gabrielli beating republican Kerry Healey in November by 21 points, while Patrick and Reilly's margins are in single digits.
Suffolk University pollster, David Paleologos says, "a lot can change, and this is but today Gabrieli is powerful, he's a Goliath. He's the 300 lb. Gorilla in the final election."
Make that the $7 million gorilla, since that's how much of his own
Money he's already spent, primarily on TV ads:
"If the governor's office were on e-bay, how much would you bid?"
"All my life I've put everything I can behind the things Iím focused on."
"And I think that will make a big difference if I get the chance to be governor and that's why Iím throwing myself all in."
But don't call him "Gov." yet. When we asked voters who the next Governor will be, more said Healey than Gabrieli, or any of the other candidates.
"I would love to be the next governor."
"Do you feel like you're gonna be?"
"I feel like our odds are pretty good."
Not so long ago, there werenít any odds on Gabrieli, because he wasn't running for Governor. He only got in when Tom Reilly ditched him as a running mate.
Now he's in front, with four weeks to go...and the past proves this race changes quickly.
My bet is that the fortune cookies are right: the best is yet to come.
