The Hiller Instinct: Hiller Instinct: Hillary & SNL
Tell the trumpet player to pack it up and go home...
And cancel all those plans for a funeral, because once again, Hillary Clinton has proven all the predictions of her political passage dead wrong...and just as her husband survived serious wounds that might have killed any other politician, today all you can do is look, and say:
"They're back," as the girl in Poltergeist II said.
"It's not easy, it's not easy, and I couldn't do it if I just didn't passionately believe it was the right thing to do..." Sen. Clinton said in January.
A tear, or the hint of a tear, saved her in New Hampshire...
"I have so many opportunities for this country. I just want to see us fall backwards..."
"Illinois Senator Barack Obama and New York Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton."
And what helped save her again yesterday was a skit on Saturday Night Live that savaged the press for being unfair to her:
In the skit, an actor playing a CNN reporter says, "Like nearly everyone in the news media, the three of us are totally in the tank for Senator Obama."
In a real debate, Hillary won sympathy--and votes--by erasing the line between presidential politics and entertainment:
"If anyone saw Saturday Night Live, you know, maybe we should ask Barack if he's comfortable and needs another pillow," she said.
So once again we can actually ask a question that once seemed so plausible, and then so impossible:
Andy Hiller asks, "Mrs. Clinton, are you inevitable?"
Sen. Clinton laughs and says, "I am working so hard every day because I don't take anything for granted."
No she doesn't. And no she won't.
If Barack Obama, or any of his supporters ever doubted what have been called her "super-sized survival" skills, now they've seen them...twice.
And--for the first time--it's Obama who must fight to survive.
