The Hiller Instinct: Mass. Primary
The first could be as low as 10-the percentage of registered voters who actually did vote. If that doesn't discourage you, try it this way: as many as 90 percent of the state's voters didn't even bother to go the polls. For whatever reason, it wasn't worth their time.
I don't think they're all lazy, or stupid. I do think they don't believe their votes can get them what they want, and I'm not convinced they're wrong.
My second number is zero, which is Governor Patrick deserves-and got-for making calls in support of Dianne Wilkerson. I could understand it if backing Wilkerson meant keeping a minority voice in the state house, but her opponent is also a minority, so that wasn't the Governor's issue. Here's mine: Wilkerson has broken laws, so she shouldn't be writing them...and now she won't be.
My final number is more than 30, the percentage of votes unknown Ed O'Reilly got against John Kerry. O'Reilly is just a name that Democrats and Independents turned off by Kerry can give a vote to. If Kerry isn't embarrassed, he should be.
