Parent to Parent: Yoga for kids

Posted: 03/05/07

From deep breaths to determined stretches to downward dog, this Hingham yoga class isn't just about mastering the moves. Kids as young as three are learning the art of relaxing.

Jan Bouthillier, mother
"They just end up being so crazy and so busy that I think the kids can get stressed out in that way, because they are always going, going, going."

While the kids’ practice poses, parents are taking notes, so they can take these stress-lowering stretches home with them.

Moms and Dads find it helps their kids get through the daily grind.

Kelly Lynch, mother
"When she has a hard time going to sleep, she'll use her yoga breath, and we'll just breathe and slow down the heart rate."

Anna Kat Bouthillier, student
"Sometimes you don't know what's on a homework page, and you don't think you can do it. So, you breathe to just calm down."

And, this is perhaps the best part for parents: the peaceful quiet that comes with yoga.

Christina Pesente, Lululemon Yoga Instructor
"Their parents always come in towards the end of class and see their children lying down completely quiet during the relaxation, and they say, 'How did you do that?'"

Experts say because yoga is not competitive, it also teaches kids that they don't have to be perfect to feel good about themselves.
