Babysitters give parents a much-needed break, but picking the right one for your child can be stressful.

Michelle Larowe, a certified nanny with more than 11 years experience, says parents need to do some digging!

"You really have to do your homework and screen your caregiver, by doing personal background checks, by doing reference checks and by doing trial time."

And parents need to see the sitter in action.

"You want to spend a day with them watching them while you are doing errands or around the house. What they're doing with your child? When your child is suppose to be down for a nap is he?"

She also recommends sitters are trained in first aid and CPR and that they know the baby basics.

"Do they know how to make your area safe? Do they know how to lay out a blanket and put age appropriate toys around? Do they know how to feed the child appropriately? How to make the bottles according to direction?"

And finally, look for feedback from your kids.

"When your little kids wiggle and their little feet go and they can't even speak yet and they're happy to see someone than it's working out well. Obviously the 3-year-old can certainly tell you."
