10 is the new 15

Parent to Parent: 10 is the new 15

Believe it or not, experts say "10 is the new 15."

Briana Lynch, daughter
"I like dancing, because it's fun, and I like to listen to music too."

With an older sister to lead the way, Briana's mother, Pamela Torres, says she and her younger sister are years ahead of their age.

Pamela Torres, mother
"She's a little prima donna. Yes, she loves the fashion, the boys and the crushes. She's into everything."

Parenting experts say kids, especially little girls, know way too much information at such a young age, thanks to music videos, movies, magazines and computers.

Dr. Valerie Goode, parenting expert
"Now the new 10 is like we were when we were 15. We're concerned with clothes, makeup."

But, experts warn parents that can be dangerous and say it’s OK to shelter your kids.

Let your kids play dress up, but don't let them go out dressed provocatively in public.

Instead of going to the mall with your daughter, spend time doing kid activities.

Dr. Valerie Goode, parenting expert
"Something like going for a walk outside, going to play outside. Going to your next-door neighbor with your child or just sitting around talking as opposed to always going shopping."

When it comes to music and TV, if your child has a favorite show, watch it with them. Talk about why they like a program, and why they admire a celebrity in a show.

Dr. Valerie Goode, parenting expert
You can be very open with your child just by talking, not judging necessarily. You can let your child come up with the judgments."

Briana may like to act older, but her mom says she's still her little baby, at least for now!

Experts say, even if your kids are old enough to be home alone after school, try to pair up with another family, so someone is always keeping an eye on them.
