Parent to Parent: Making the Grade: Super study space
A student's day doesn't end when the bell rings. After they leave the classroom, they have to hit the books at home.
Josh Kaster, student
"I have a little quick snack, I come up and I do my homework."
But it's not only how they do their homework, it's where they do their homework that can have their study style going from good to great.
The most important element is the desk.
Laine Dougherty, Laine's Logic
"The best thing when organizing a desk is to have all the supplies that the child is going to need, right there, within arms reach.
Group things like scissors and pencils together and use an organizer to keep everything in place.
Laine Dougherty, Laine's Logic
"Then you don't have to worry about fishing at the back of the drawer or things rolling around."
Next, make sure there's plenty of room for little minds to come up with big ideas!
Laine Dougherty, Laine's Logic
"You need a lot of space to be able to spread out an open book."
Another smart study idea, create a colorful filing system to keep tabs on school papers.
Laine Dougherty, Laine's Logic
"Different colors for each subject."
And get a calendar to keep track of projects and reports.
Laine Dougherty, Laine's Logic
"Put the date on the calendar and then count backwards to figure out when you should start the project. Then you're able to manage your time a little better."
Store extra supplies like paper and folders in higher drawers that are easier to reach and keep some extra pencils in a nearby holder.
Laine Dougherty, Laine's Logic
"The quicker you can grab your pencil, the quicker you can get to work on your homework."
And it's ok if your child doesn't have a desk. They can be organized anywhere in the house. Filling a portable container with all the necessary school supplies make it really easy for kids to study anywhere in the house.
For parents, create a stackable file system with a bin for each child's papers.
Laine Dougherty, Laine's Logic
"So that they know they need to be looked at or signed."
With these top tips for homework success your student will make the grade this school year.
