When going for scholarship money, many students think you need super high test scores.

Ben Kaplan, scholarship coach
"A lot of scholarships don't even look at your grades or test scores. The Arts Recognition and Talent Search, it's based on submitting an artistic portfolio, not on grades and test scores."

Don't think scholarships are only for low-income students.

Ben Kaplan, scholarship coach
"Merit-based scholarships -- never look at your finances so it's a great way to fill in those need-based financial aid gaps. It's for students of all incomes."

The most common mistake experts say students make is not applying early enough.

Ben Kaplan, scholarship coach
"Sometimes, people wait until the school year begins, there's a lot of deadlines that happen early on in the school year people miss out on."

Also, be sure to apply for many scholarships--don't limit yourself to just one.  So do your homework.  Apply early and often.  That way you can ensure yourself a better shot of getting a scholarship.
