Protecting Your Pet: Cat adoption
On the Web
Right now, it's hard to find an empty cage at the MSPCA adoption centers.
"We see annually about 11,000 cats surrendered to the seven MSPCA shelters in the state of Massachusetts," said Megan Rock, of the MSPCA-Angell Animal Hospital, said.
And about a third of those cats come in during the summer.
"This is our busiest time of year," Rock said.
That's why the MSPCA is gearing up to find the furry felines homes.
"We are offering a cat adoption pack to help new cats get acquainted to their home," Rock said, "It is so important to get the message out that there are many adult cats that are in shelters waiting for homes."
One reason so many cats come in during the summer is because cats are more active during warmer weather and are more apt to be brought in as strays. It's not just cats that come in either. The shelter also sees more kittens this time of year.
"We see a huge number of kittens, only because this is when they're breeding," Rock said. "There are lots of litters being born, stray cats are having litters and folks are bringing them in."
To keep your cat safe and out of a shelter, make sure your cat has a collar and tags, a microchip and is spayed or neutered. Cats that aren't spayed or neutered are more likely to wander away and get lost.
"Spading and neutering is so important," Rock said.
And if you don't already have a furry friend or are looking for another cute companion...
"Adult cats are great," Rock said. "They are ready to go home."
