Protecting Your Pet: Doggy makeover

Posted: 12/10/07

These precious pooches at the animal rescue league of Boston are looking for new homes, including thirteen year old Yogi.

Dr. Erin Doyle, Veterinarian
"He was owned, but his owner was moving so she couldn't keep him when she moved and so she surrendered him to us."

In the next cage, Dandy:

Dr. Erin Doyle, Veterinarian
"Dandy was actually picked up by an animal control officer because he was a stray so we don't really know anything about his previous life."

Many of these cute canines come in to the rescue league looking a little worse for wear and that's something staff members say can hurt their chances of finding a new home.

Dr. Erin Doyle, Veterinarian
"Unfortunately there are those practical aspects of it that a dog that is, that looks cleaner and looks cuter is going to be a little more appealing to people, your eye goes to them."

But this holiday season, both Yogi and Dandy are going to shine! They're getting a day of beauty, compliments of DoggieDay Pet Grooming Salon.

Rob Galeski, DoggieDay
"It's important simply because the animals need to be cleaned, groomed up so when they go on the floor there's less time that they're staying in the kennels and they get adopted out much quicker."

The salon has worked with the rescue league for about three years, opening their doors and their hearts to these dogs in need. It's all for free because the salon shares the shelter's mission.

Rob Galeski, DoggieDay
"To not spend a lot of time in the cages at the shelter, to get adopted out as quickly as possible, but also to go to a great home."

The first step to turning these pooches into pampered pets, a brushing and hair cut.

Emily Morelli, Groomer
"It's kind of hard to tell because he is white, but you can see just chunks of hair that are all kind of tangled up."

Then it's time for a bath with some bark!

Emily Morelli, groomer
"I'm going to do an apricot sulfur shampoo on this guy, it's an exfoliate shampoo."

The final touch:

Emily Morelli, groomer
"That's a good boy, can I comb some of this up so you look nice and smooth?"

Both Yogi and Dandy come out looking like stars; a best-in-show makeover for two very deserving dogs.

Rob Galeski, DoggieDay
"Smile for the camera, you're so handsome!"
