Protecting Your Pet reports

We use IQ tests to measure our own intelligence...And now there's an at-home IQ test available to measure your dog's brainpower. 7's Dylan Dreyer has more in "Protecting Your Pet."

Like many dog owners...Laura thinks her Jack Russell terrier, Shamus is pretty sharp.

Laura MacFeeley, pet owner
"He is very clever."

Now there's a way to gauge if your dog really is all brains or just bark! You can test their Pooch IQ.

Stacy Stubblefield, Pooch IQ co-founder
"We test for things like persistence, reasoning skills, short term memory...Just basically a lot of things you would test for on a human IQ kit."

The dog is scored by their response to simple exercises...

Stacy Stubblefield, Pooch IQ co-founder
"For each reaction the dog will be allocated a certain number of points and then you convert that into an IQ score, and the range is from 55 at the very lowest...to 150 which would be an absolute genius dog."

We put Shamus to the test. The first task? Finding a treat hidden underneath one of these three cups, for him it's a no-brainer.

To test his problem solving skills...Shamus must figure out how to get the treats out of a toy and after just a few minutes...Sweet success!

To test his attention span, Shamus must get four balls out of a plush toy without giving up...Not an easy task.

After 15 exercises, it's time for Shamus' report card.

Laura MacFeeley, pet owner
"Shamus' IQ is 121 which qualifies him as a smarty pants."

And Shamus' owner couldn't be more proud!

Laura MacFeeley, pet owner
"I thought he was smart but I had no idea that he was that smart."

If you're interested in testing your dog's Pooch IQ it costs $49.99 and is available on the company's website.
