Room For Improvement: Leominster
If you have a decorating dilemma, "Room for Improvement" may be able to help. Our Design Team tackles its latest project in Leominster. That's where a couple and their new son are trying to keep their family room from turning into a baby room. 7's Chikage Windler takes us there for the room re-do.
Homeowner Mary Garner exclaims,"Oh good boy!" as she plays with her son Ryan.
7-month-old Ryan is the love of Mary and Chad Garner's lives. One of the joys of parenthood: baby stuff everywhere!
"It's toys, toys, and it's wonderful and he has plenty of things to play with, but we want to have a place for it," Mary explains.
So the Garners decided to reclaim their family room. Their goal: keep it adult, update the look, and organize Ryan's things.
Mary continues, "Saw your segment and said 'huh!' Maybe I should try this first."
"They gave me a number of ideas and such of what they liked and what they didn't like, but they just really didn't know how to get those into the space. And that's where I came in," says Designer Valerie Henderson-Odell of Designs in Style.
Designer Valerie Henderson-Odell came in with a plan.
"The most dramatic was the color," Valerie explains. "We went from white to a really creamy buttery yellow."
While painter David Kupfer brushes on the finishing touches, Valerie and her son Conor get to work. The old TV stand is upgraded to a new entertainment center. The heavy old drapes are replaced by roman shades with custom valances. The overstuffed built-ins get breathing room with fewer books and more decorative accents. And the red brick fireplace looks modern with a fresh coat of white masonry paint.
"Oh, good idea!" Valerie says to her son Conor as he helps out.
Stainguarded slipcovers, a soft area rug, childproof locks, and this storage ottoman for toys make sure Ryan feels at home here. His favorite, the fish tank, is a focal point of the new and improved room.
"Oh my goodness! Ooh! This is not our living room!" Mary Garner exclaims in shock when she sees the room for the first time. "I love it!" she says as she gives Designer Valerie Henderson-Odell a great big hug in appreciation.
The Garner's budget was $2,500, and our Design Team came in at $1,846 to provide a family room that's truly family friendly.
