Room For Improvement: Logan USO Transformation Part 2
Lisa Caruccio, USO Volunteer
"They're risking their lives for us, and they deserve everything we can do for them, no matter how little it is."
Volunteer crews worked tirelessly to take this room apart, install custom-built cabinetry and new lighting and give it a fresh coat of color.
Ed Freni, Massport Director of Aviation
"It's been a community effort to take this on."
Now it's time for the final touches and Room For Improvement designer Carol Iberger is back to help the team finish this makeover.
First, the last bits of construction are completed. Black granite is laid throughout the space and a storage tower to hold luggage is added.
Carol Iberger, Re-Deux Design
"It's easy to use, it'll hold a lot of pieces and give much more space to the soldiers in the room."
Then in comes a very special tribute. A flag, to thank our troops, is hung by members of the military.
Ed Freni, Massport Director of Aviation
"Everybody wants to pay respect to our service men and women."
It looks like this room is ready for some furnishings.
By the door a reception area is set up for the USO's volunteer staff to greet troops. Next, smaller pieces of furniture are placed in the living area.
Carol Iberger, Re-Deux Design
"We actually gave a lot more seating area to the space just by keeping the furniture at a smaller scale."
A computer station is created and the kitchen gets high-back chairs at the new island.
Carol Iberger, Re-Deux Design
"Now it's visually laid out so that it looks actually like a bigger space."
Finally, some decorative accents make this room feel just like home.
Will this lounge be everything the USO volunteers hoped it would be?
Richard P. Pelosi, USO of New England Executive Director
"Wow. Look at this."
Lisa Caruccio, USO Volunteer
"This isn't what I was expecting. It looks a lot better."
Richard P. Pelosi, USO of New England Executive Director
"This is beautiful."
Lisa Caruccio, USO Volunteer
"It looks so much bigger in here."
It took a lot generous people, hard work and long hours to make this USO lounge a true home away from home for our men and women in uniform and we think they will love it.
