Room For Improvement: Boys & Girls Club of South Boston

Posted: 11/15/07

Homework, games, sports. The Boys & Girls Club in South Boston is a safe place for young people to grow and learn, while having fun.

Harry Duvall, Boys & Girls Club
"One of the main things that we're always doing is working on the development of a positive self identity."

The kids range in age from 6 to 18, so the staff has to make sure everyone's needs are met.

Harry Duvall, Boys & Girls Club
"We have art programs, we have education programs, we have sports/ fitness programs, we have life skill programs, character/leadership development programs."

This room, which is being used for storage, has also been used as a lounge for the club's pre-teens. But it's not exactly welcoming.

Harry Duvall, Boys & Girls Club
"They've been functional, but they really aren't in line with what pre-teens find comfortable."

Designer Alexandra Slote is here to change that with the help of generous donations from Bernie & Phyl's Furniture, Rocky's Ace Hardware and Business Interiors.

"I wanted it to be fun and hip and age appropriate."

First the walls are painted a bright white, the perfect canvas for a creative mural.

David Sanborn, Mid-Mod Design
"I was trying to think of something that would be very graphic, that would kind of pop and catch the kids' attention and at the same time be something they could relate to."

Then checkerboard flooring connects the color scheme.

Alexandra Slote, Alexandra Slote Interiors
"I just designed everything off of the whole black and white theme."

Our designer divides the room, to get two uses out of it. A desk area is set up for homework time. And red seating adds a bold splash of color to the recreational area.

Then a personal touch, artwork created by the children are hung on the walls.

Alexandra Slote, Alexandra Slote Interiors
"They came up with all of the artwork design on their own and produced it on their own."

It's time for the kids to check out their new lounge.

Kids
"Cool. Look at it. Cool."

It looks like this lounge is a big hit. These kids are really going to enjoy this space for a long time thanks to generous contributions and a lot of hard work.
