Room For Improvement: Amherst living room
When the oversized sofa moved in to this New Hampshire living room, the Powers family moved out.
Beth Powers, homeowner
"It consumed the entire room and we ended up not using the room anymore."
But they are ready to reclaim the space.
Beth Powers, homeowner
"My goal was to start to use the room again. To make it a room that was inviting and comfortable."
So designer Cheryl Fyfe of Cathy Kert Interiors is here to help them move back in.

"We wanted to create more seating, more comfortable seating, and to make it a little more home-like."
The color scheme is decided first.

"What I used as the inspiration for all color in the room was the beautiful area rug that was in the room already. It had some great, beautiful tones in it."
Then it's time to say bye bye to that big couch. It's replaced with smaller furniture to create a more intimate setting.

"We re-arranged the furniture to make it more comfortable for company."
Next a space-saving coffee table hides a lot.

"We thought that we'd like to keep Elizabeth's toys in the room. So we thought a coffee table with storage would be the ultimate solution."
And a beautiful wooden desk is brought in from another room.

"There's a lot things that people will place in a particular room and forget about it. And it takes on a whole new life when you move it in another space."
Blue window treatments add an extra splash of color, new doorknobs spice up the built-in cabinet and family photos are arranged for a personal touch.
Cheryl Fyfe, Cathy Kert Interiors
"I chose to put them on the wall beside the sofa, because we have some walking space behind the sofa allowing you to walk back there to look at the photos."
It's time for this family to return to their living room.
Beth Powers, homeowner
"Oh look at the pictures. Look at the chair. Oh wow, look at these drapes."
Before you run out and buy new furniture, take a look around your house. Re-using your old furniture can save you a lot of money and sometimes look even better. The bill for this room was a little under $2500. It's now fit for a family.
