Room For Improvement reports

From boring and bare to warm and comfortable. Today our design team heads to Norfolk to tackle a living room that's hardly lived in. 7's Lauren Przybyl has this week's "Room For Improvement."

This family room is almost empty because the family who lives here rarely uses it anymore.

Pamela Carrison, homeowner
"We use it maybe once a year."

It was full of antique furniture, which didn't make the space very welcoming.

Pamela Carrison, homeowner
"The first word that comes to my mind is cold."

But this family is ready to change that.

Pamela Carrison, homeowner
"We want to reclaim it and make it something that we'll sit in every day."

Robert Carrison, homeowner
"I like big oversize furniture so it had to be comfortable and I wanted a recliner."

Designer Julia Landers is here to make their wishes come true.

First the boring white color is replaced with a blue hue, by Tim Hall Painting.

Julia Landers, Julia Landers Design
"This color is really the new neutral."

Then new window treatments give the room some height.

Julia Landers, Julia Landers Design
"In rooms with low ceilings you really don't want to add valances because they can really drop the height of the ceiling. So it's always best to use a panel or a blind."

Some of the antique furniture stays and this beautiful secretary gets a bright update.

Julia Landers, Julia Landers Design
"What I did was use some leftover wallpaper from another project and I put it on some leftover mat board and just popped it in."

In comes new comfy seating and some more wood furniture.

Julia Landers, Julia Landers Design
"In keeping with the antique furniture in the room I really wanted to incorporate some other substantial wood pieces and I actually was able to find some other pieces with reclaimed and salvaged wood."

Then our designer has a clever idea for extra light.

Julia Landers, Julia Landers Design
"In some of the older homes they're really lacking overhead lighting, and one of the aspects I wanted to bring in was some overhead lighting. And what I did was I used a candelabra and they can light the candles and it will really bring a lot of ceiling warmth to the room."

A game corner is set up for entertaining and additional accessories make this room more homey.

This family room looks ready for a cozy winter night.

Carrison Family
"Oh wow. Woah. Look at the lamp. Oh Julia, you did a great job."

I think they like it. This redo cost $6000. It's a little pricey, but the family says it's well worth it.
