Room For Improvement reports

Today our design team is heading to Westford to transform a mismatched living room into a contemporary conversation area. 7's Lauren Przybyl has this week's "Room For Improvement."

A striking wall color, mismatched furniture, no curtains. The Gennas just can't decide how to decorate this room.

Georgia Genna, homeowner
"We really want a room that was going to be warm, inviting when we had guests over, a great entertaining room."

Brian Genna, homeowner
"We wanted formal but not too formal and, ya know, something comfortable."

Designer Maxine Rosenthal is here to work within these red walls to create the perfect place for entertaining.

Maxine Rosenthal, MaxDesigns
"They felt as I did that an eclectic sort of feel would be the way to go. So you'll be able to see some of it feels very contemporary and some of it has some Asian touches to it."

And there's no more plaid furniture! New seating in a stylish pattern is first on the list.

Maxine Rosenthal, MaxDesigns
"Brian liked, loved this fabric, fell in love with it and so that really was the starting point and the whole color scheme came from this fabric on these chairs."

The round shapes in the fabric are the inspiration for furniture throughout this room.

Maxine Rosenthal, MaxDesigns
"This room is very linear and so trying to bring in some round shapes was a way to kind of soften these edges."

A new couch gets some eye-catching pillows. And extra seating is tucked away in a very convenient place.

Maxine Rosenthal, MaxDesigns
"We also have the two red ottomans, which can also be pulled up to the table or just pulled up into the room."

Striped curtains are both fashionable and functional.

Maxine Rosenthal, MaxDesigns
"We wanted to give the allusion of the ceiling being taller, the room being taller."

New artwork and decorative elements complete this new look. And our designer says that mixing reds is not so risky.

Maxine Rosenthal, MaxDesigns
"The reds have the same values, even though they're not the exact same color. They're not jarring against each other, they feel more like they blend."

So what does the family think of their new entertaining space?

Brian Genna, homeowner
"Oh wow!"

Georgia Genna, homeowner
"This is awesome!"

Brian Genna, homeowner
"This is beautiful!"

The price tag for this radiant red room came in $1800 under budget. This is now perfect for entertaining in style.
