Room For Improvement: Acton family room

If your family room is over-used and under-decorated, you might be ready for a room re-do. Our Design Team tackles its latest project at the Bradley house in Acton. Their family room used to be fun and fresh, now it's out of date. 7's Chikage Windler shows the transformation in this week's "Room for Improvement."

"Carol! How are you doing?" asks designer Karin Curtin as she walks into Carol Bradley's home.

Designers Karin Curtin and Carol Iberger of Re-deux Design have their work cut out for them at the Bradley home.

Homeowner Carol Bradley explains, "We've got to change the color on the walls, on the rug, things on the walls besides the paint, the coffee table, and lighting is huge, we have no lighting."

The goal: turn this hodge-podge family room into one that's colorful, coordinated, and more grown-up.

First step, getting rid of the pale green on the walls and getting bold with 2 coats of chocolate brown.

Painter Tony Gaudet of Living Color Painting in Maynard says, "A lot of people are afraid to use the dark colors because everyone thinks it makes the room look small, but i think iI really makes it look nice."

And it looks even better next to the Bradley's new plasma TV.

"My husband has been dying for a plasma," says homeowner Carol Bradley.

Next, the pink rug is out, a new berber is Berberhe sofa stays, but gets re-arranged. An old chest gets repaired and re-painted. Brand new buys include a round end table, leather recliner, and coffee table with extra storage.

Designer Carol Iberger looks at the room and says, "Ok, like that better."

Then, it's time for accessories, in brown and light blue hues.

Finally, the walls get finishing touches.

"How's it look ladies?" asks Karin.

A mirror, dried flowers, framed art, and shelves for family photos are added. In just one day, it's a whole new room.

The Bradley family walks in and Carol Bradley exclaims, "Oh, look at it! Oooh! It'sOoht like a real room!"

Carol and her daughters Sarah and Ali can't believe their eyes.

Karin Curtin of Re-deux Design says, "That is the impact, and it just makes it look so much more like an adult, romantic room, but yet still kid-friendly."

Carol Bradley asks her daughters, "You guys, do you love it?"

Sarah Bradley says, "I love it!"

Carol says, "I love it too!"

Designer Carol Iberger of Re-deux Design says, "It offered somewhat of a challenge, but we knew it had good bones to begin with. It had beautiful hardwood floors, the windows, they have a french door."

Carol Bradley gives both designers a big hug, "Oh I love it! I love it! I love it!"

"The Bradley's budget was $5500. Most of that went to the plasma TV, but what was left made a huge impact on their family room.
