Special Report: Home Laser Hair Removal
Soft, silky, hair-free skin -- we all want it, but the shaving, the waxing, the plucking can be a real pain.
Cheryl Page
"In the summer you're doing it almost daily and you don't have time to do it everyday."
Laser hair removal gets rid of hair for months, but requires an expensive trip to a specialist. Or does it...?
We already go the drugstore to pick up razors, waxes and creams. But imagine taking a trip to the store and leaving with a laser instead.
Dr. Tom Rohrer, Skin Care Associates
"People will be able to buy a unit, use it in their home."
The Spa Touch laser isn't on the shelves just yet. But the home system has already been tested and approved by the FDA. We got a sneak peak at the prototype.
"You press this little purple button here to fire it."
The laser works by a combination of light and heat, which singes and destroys the hair follicle with just a touch of a button.
"So you press down and 1-2-3..."
And gets rid of unwanted hair for a month and a half or more.
Dr. Tom Rohrer, Skin Care Associates
"Some of the hair will stay gone forever."
It took only a two-minute demonstration for Cheryl of Medford to get the hang of it.
Cheryl Page, Medford
"It was easy. Very easy."
Easy, though not pain free.
Dr. Tom Rohrer, Skin Care Associates
"It stings a little bit when you do the treatment, the skin will be pink for a couple hours, but that's about it."Cheryl
"It just felt like mild heat, just a quick heat flash."
But, you're probably asking, is it really safe to bring a laser into the house?
Dr. Tom Rohrer, Skin Care Associates
"The biggest fear would be if someone fired this at an eye... You know, directly at an eye or over an eye."
So while manufacturers smooth out issues like safety and price, for now, we'll still need to keep shaving, waxing and tweezing, to keep our bodies silky, smooth and hair free.
The company plans to make the Spa Touch home system available to U.S. customers next year.
