Hands Free Texting

Special Report: Hands Free Texting

Posted: 09/30/10

Hands on the wheel, eyes on the road, and now no texting allowed. But there are ways that drivers who love to text can continue their cell phone communications safely.

That's why we gave some touchless texters a try, like "Voice on the Go." It's a program that lets you text, tweet, send emails, even update your Facebook status, all with your voice.

Mark, Texter

"If it's accurate, I think it'd be great!"

Nicole Oliverio, 7News

"To keep it hands free, I just put on the Bluetooth. So before you even pull away from the curb, all you have to just do is dial the number. Once you're in the system, it's all about using your voice. And like most voice command systems, well, they're not 100%, but they are pretty accurate."

It will cost you $4.99 a month, or $39.99 for the year, and it works with any phone.

Another option is "Got2bVoice"

Tim Suri, Got2bWireless Executive Vice President

"We wanted to design a product for safety."

This service comes with a Bluetooth system for your car, so you'll be able to speak your texts and hear your emails loud and clear right through your car speakers.

And there's more. You can also do things like check the weather or get traffic reports without having to touch your phone.

Tim Suri, Got2bWireless Executive Vice President

"All those great things, just by voice."

Nicole Oliverio, 7News

"And because you're talking through the car speaker system, you need to make sure that you speak clearly so that the program will understand you."

The price to get this system installed in your car, along with a one year subscription to the voice program, is $125.

There's also technology for anyone who wants to get rid of the temptation of texting at the wheel altogether, for themselves or for their kids.

Try "ZoomSafer."

It's a program you download on your phone and it kicks on automatically when your car hits 15 miles an hour. It locks the phone so you can't send texts or emails, and prevents your phone from receiving any texts or emails or even phone calls.

If someone tries to text you while you're in a moving car, they'll get an automatic response back saying you're behind the wheel.

Mike O'Brien, Parent

"It gives you as the parent the peace of mind."

It works on Blackberries, Windows mobile and Android phones, but not iPhones. The cost is $2.99 a month or $25 a year.

These are choices that let drivers who want to stay in touch by text do so safely and without breaking the law.

But don't even think about using these hands-free technologies if you're what the law calls a junior operator, that's someone under 18. The new law that took effect today clearly prohibits that.
