Special Report: Danvers family battles cancer twice

Kezia and her husband Mike were devastated. "It was kind of a shock to find out all of a sudden, ‘oh by the way, you have cancer,'" Fitzgerald said.

"It turned me upside down," Mike added. "I don't really sleep. The possibility of losing two people in my family is overwhelming to the point to where I shut down."

Despite the two diagnoses, the family of three is rising to the challenge.

"You just have to say, ‘ok, how do I fix it?'" Kezia said. "So you go and do the treatments and you get better. And there's no other option -- you fight it."

Kezia is in the final stages of her treatment. But Saoirse still has a difficult road ahead, all before she turns 2. She will undergo surgery to remove tumors in her head. She'll receive chemotherapy three times per week and will most likely need a bone marrow transplant.

"The extent of disease and the amount of disease she has definitely makes us concerned," said Esther Obeng, Soairse's doctor at Children's Hospital Boston..

"She had a lot of swelling in her head," Kezia said. "We could tell from the outside she was doing better. She's a very happy kid."

Kezia and her daughter seem to be responding well to treatment, but the family's finances are taking a huge hit.

Mike cited friends, family and the kindness of strangers, or else, he said they might be homeless.

"We've got a tough road, but we're going to make it," he said.
