Special Report: Pets safety during a hurricane

When a hurricane is threatening, don't forget to make preparations for your pets. From canines to critters, there is a lot to do to make sure everyone is prepared to ride out the storm safely.

"It’s very important to make sure when you're shopping for your family that you include your pets on your shopping list,” said Cherie Wachter, humane society.

On the top of your list - pet food - make sure you have a two week supply.

"Now’s not the time to change the food in your pet's diet. Ctick to what they're used to,” said Wachter.

And fill up, or stock up on enough water to quench your pet's thirst. Make sure you have a two weeks supply of all of your pet's medications. If you have a cat, don't forget cat litter, and remember plastic bags to handle and dispose of waste.

Now is also the time to make sure your pet has current identification, and that it wears a collar with contact information.

"Also maybe on the back side put the phone number of someone outside the area that might know how to get in touch with you after the storm should subside,” said Wachter.

If your pet has a microchip, make sure all of the information is up-to-date and tell your pet to say cheese.

"Another important thing - a current photo of your pet,” said Wachter.

Put the photo -- along with your pets' medical and vaccination records -- in a waterproof plastic bag or container to keep it dry.

"It’s important to keep all of that information with you,” said Wachter.

It’s also important to decide where you and your pets are going to ride out the storm in advance. If you stay home, keep your pets inside with you. If you're not safe staying home, neither are your pets.

"You never separate from your pets because they are your children so if you leave, you must take them with you,” said Laurie Hoffman.

If there's a chance you might have to leave, plan ahead and pack a ‘pet suitcase’ just in case.

"Get that together in advance when we are not in a hurricane so it's ready to go if you've got to move quickly,” said Hoffman.

Pack the suitcase with essentials, like food, water and medication.

Check out pet friendly hotels or stay with friends. You'll need to bring a crate, your pet's records and also supplies, including food, bowls, leashes, a favorite toy and blanket to keep your pet comfortable and reduce stress.

"You want to make sure if your pet gets very nervous during the storm check with your veterinarian,” said Wachter.

Your vet will tell you if you need to medicate your pet. Don’t try to self medicate during a storm. And finally - there are special things you need to do after the storm.

"The last thing you want to do is just open the door and let your dog outside. Put your dog on a leash and walk outside carefully and make sure you watch where you're walking,” said Wachter.

Pets could be confused and disoriented, and there may be downed trees and power lines. Remember, when it comes to pets, it's important for us to be their best friends.
