Green and Glam

Special Report: Green and Glam

Hollywood may have a reputation for excess, but when it comes to fashion, many stars are now getting caught "green handed"

Alison Barnard, In-jean-ious
"They want to look good they want to help the environment."

Julia Roberts has "recycling in the bag," she doesn't choose paper or plastic. Instead she hits the market with canvas grocery bags

Jonathan Marcoschamer, Ecoist
"Just by picking up one reusable shopping bag, you would be saving about three or four, five plastic bags a week"

Now, designers like Hermes, Stella McCartney and Anya Hindmarch's and even Barney's New York has caught on to the craze, coming out with trendy totes.  The reusable "I'm not a plastic bag" is so hot in Hollywood it's sold out. Other stars are pushing recycling to a new level. Check out these designer clutches, Clutched by Cameron Diaz and supermodel Petra Novacova. They're made from garbage, old gum wrappers to be exact.

Jonathan Marcoschamer, Ecoist
"They like seeing us use other recycled materials that they never thought that could be recycled into something so fashionable."

Actress and mom Jennifer Garner is protecting the planet by wearing special but stylish jeans.

Alison Barnard, In-jean-ious
"They use cotton that has not been treated with pesticides."

Pine Four is also giving back, donating one dollar to plant a tree with every pair of sold.

The perfect match to those green jeans could be some high fashion hemp, like these organic sweaters by Viridis Luxe.  But in the past eco-friendly fibers were uncomfortable and known as "crunchy granola"

Amadea West, Viridis Luxe
"That's exactly what we are trying to avoid."

But not anymore-stars like Jennifer Aniston and Sheryl Crow and more are choosing this couture line.

Hala Bahmet, Viridis Luxe
"We can build up the awareness of hemp by glamorizing it and by putting it into beautiful clothing."

But for other stars, it's not what's in the shirt, but what's on it. Look for Jessica Alba and Ellen Degenres to be shouting environmentally friendly slogans from their shirts. Designer tee's by C&C, offer tips like "go paperless", "turn off the tap" and "pull the plug".

Timothy Olmstead, Barney's New York
"A decision to wear something with a message is a great way to send that message to other people."

So will these eco-friendly fashions cost you big bucks? If it doesn't have a designer label, it will almost always be less expensive. That makes it easy, and affordable to be green and glam.
