Special Report: Rent a Pet
Farng, a doctor, divides his time between long hours at work and his small apartment. And while he would love to have a dog, his lifestyle just doesn't allow for one.
Farng Yang Foo, FlexPetz Client
"Just the way my life is, I wouldn't be able to give them the amount of time they need. "
So he does the next best thing - he rents one! A new company called FlexPetz, allows members to rent a dog for a day, a weekend, or even a week at a time! The company is coming to Boston soon and says they appeal mostly to city dwellers who love dogs, but can't take on the full-time responsibility!
Chris Haddix, FlexPetz Representative
"The members get the benefits of pet ownership, even if it’s on a part time basis."
All of the FlexPetz are rescue dogs from California. Potential "rover renters" can choose an animal from a website or pick them in person. The company is quick to point out, not just anybody can rent their pets.
Members must apply on line, and then go through a very thorough screening process that includes a home inspection and a personality test.
Chris Haddix, FlexPetz Representative
"If they are uncomfortable or acting in an odd manner, then its something we are gonna notice, and its something will talk about and be aware of."
If you get the thumbs up, FlexPetz provides everything an owner needs: including food, bowls and even a doggie bed.
"I love dogs and I don't have one myself because I live alone and it would be very expensive, but I would love to do that."
"A dog should be owned and loved; I don't think they should be rented like an inanimate object."
This "doggie for a day" concept has some animal lovers barking mad!
Kara Holmquist, MSPCA Dir. of Advocacy
"We really have concerns about the idea of renting dogs, they're certainly not like movies or cars, this really views them as commodities and creates a mindset that pets are disposable. We think that a dog deserves a good home and loving family."
But FlexPetz says the goal is always to go from rental to real member of the family.
Chris Haddix, FlexPetz Representative
"That is the goal, for all of our members, and all of our dogs, that they will be adopted full time."
If you'd like to pay-per-day for your pet, FlexPetz charges $150 to become a member. There's a monthly service charge of about $50 and you'll pay $40 a day to rent a dog.
Farng Yang Foo, FlexPetz Client
"If you cannot have your own pet, then I think this is a great way to experience having a dog."
For Farng, who feels adoption is not an option, the right fit right now is "Rent A Pet." Michelle Relerford reporting for 7News.
